Abdullahi Haruna , Director of Veterinary Services, Ministry
of Agriculture, Jigawa , said the state government was taking
all necessary measures to prevent outbreak of Bird Flu in the
state.
Haruna, a Veterinary doctor, said this while speaking with
newsmen in Dutse on Tuesday.
He said that the surveillance and monitoring team along with
doctors in the local government areas of the state would
educate the people on how to identify a case of bird flu.
"We have taken all measures to make sure that bird flu doesn’t
come into Jigawa. We have offices, including desk officers
specifically to take charge of that.
"We also have vehicles to go round the state in case of an
outbreak of any nature,’’ Haruna said.
He said whenever there was any report of outbreak, the
veterinary units would investigate and send samples of the
infected birds to the National Veterinary Research Institute
(NVR), Vom.
The director said that when they received positive result from
the NVR, the affected farm would automatically be suspended
from further operation.
According to him, the affected farm will also be depopulated
to prevent further spread of the disease.
Haruna further said that if the disease happened to be
different from bird flu, then the birds would be put on drugs.
He, therefore, urged poultry farmers in the state to take
proactive measures to prevent the outbreak of the disease.
Haruna also advised farmers and other members of the public
to report any case of strange disease in their farms and in
their birds to the nearest veterinary facility.
"If anyone notices any strange disease among his birds, or
notices the death of five to 10 birds at a go, such cases should
immediately be reported to any of our clinics in seven centres ,’’
he said.
According to him, the ministry has veterinary clinics in
Birniwa, Jahun, Hadejia, Birnin Kudu, Gumel, Kazaure and
Ringim local government areas of the state.
